TODAY (Friday 31st March 2023) was the extended deadline by which tree planting must be registered to be included in ‘The Queen’s Green Canopy’ (QGC) as a legacy to Her Majesty. Ruddington has seen numerous local companies, groups and individuals get involved with this national initiative.
The latest to be revealed is at our Country Park, where The Friends of Rushcliffe Country Park planted 10 mature trees, including Hornbeam, Silver Birch and Crab Apple to replace trees affected by ‘Ash Dieback’ (top photo). These were funded by Ridge Clean Energy – the company which is hoping for planning permission to construct a large solar farm on land south of Ruddington.
Company representative, Rebecca Renfrew, who joined The Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire Dame Elizabeth Fradd at the Park last week to watch The Friends at work, reveals: “The tree planting happened in the morning – it was such a gorgeous day and so they had a large volunteer group and managed to dig the holes, plant and stake the trees out. Liz was really interested to chat with the volunteers and hear about how they got into volunteering and thank them for all the work they do.”
It follows another major planting initiative in Rushcliffe Country Park late last year by Artex employees from Ruddington – who altogether planted 400 hedges and trees donated by the business.
Other Ruddington QGC projects include Brookside Residents’ Action Group (BRAG) for The QGC’s row of 106 Dwarf Hornbeam saplings along the boundary of existing homes and the new ‘Fairham Green’ development off Wilford Road – agreed and funded by Bloor Homes East Midlands. Nearby, Ruddington Parish Council has planted Aspen, Willow, Broadleaf, Field Maple and Cherry trees at Sellors’ Recreation Ground; whilst young Sam & Jack appear on the official QGC Map for planting a Plum tree in their garden on Loughborough Road.
Other projects in Ruddington last summer to ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee‘ (before King Charles extended the deadline for The QGC after his mum’s sad passing) included a Royal Oak Tree on our village green; and further Hornbeam planting by software company MHR in its historic grounds at Ruddington Hall.
